TAMPA, Fla. - Darrelle Revis likely will make his debut for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers against the star cornerbacks old team, the New York Jets. Although theres been no official announcement, the three-time All-Pro has been practicing without any reported setbacks and teammates are confident Revis will start Sundays season opener. "Were going to have all our pieces, finally, and it should be good," defensive end Adrian Clayborn said Monday. "Well see." Revis is recovering from knee surgery that sidelined him most of last season with the Jets. The Bucs gradually increased his workload in practice during training camp, however the seventh-year pro did not see any game action during the preseason. Coach Greg Schiano is not concerned. The objective since late April, when Revis was acquired in exchange for the 13th overall pick in the draft, has been to not rush the rehabilitation process in hopes of having him ready to face his old team. "As long as there are no setbacks" that remains the plan, Schiano said. Revis and All-Pro safety Dashon Goldson were brought in this off-season to bolster a secondary that nearly set a NFL record for passing yards allowed in 2012. Revis was given a new six-year, $96 million contract, and Goldson received a five-year, $41.25 deal in free agency after helping San Francisco reach the Super Bowl last season. Rookie Johnthan Banks, a second-round draft pick competing for the cornerback job on the side opposite Revis, feels the secondary has played together enough in practice to be effective as a unit in the opener. "Weve been together since OTAs and we know what Revis can do," Banks said. "Hes been practicing with us the past two weeks. We pretty much know each other. It will grow as the season goes." The Bucs reconvened for practice Monday after having the weekend off. Schiano said its too early to tell if another projected starter, guard Carl Nicks, will play against the Jets. Nicks missed the final nine games of last season and is recovering from surgery on his left big toe. His comeback stalled last month when he was diagnosed as having a MRSA infection in a blister on the side of his left foot. He hasnt practiced since. Like Revis, Nicks did not play a down during the preseason. The Bucs are exploring a number of different options, including the prospect of moving centre Jeremy Zuttah to left guard, if Nicks is out. Tackle Gabe Carimi and backup centre Ted Larsen are other possibilities. "We have guys on our roster, well just choose one of them. They all can play guard," Schiano said. Coach Dennis Allen made the announcement at the end of his news conference Monday, saying it was "part of the plan" that apparently took shape when Pryor recovered from an injury to his right knee in late November. "Its been a while since weve gotten an opportunity to see Terrelle in a game and I want to get him in the game and get another opportunity to evaluate him," Allen said. "We all get frustrated when were not playing, but (Pryor has) done a good job with that and hes going to get another opportunity." Pryor was the leading rusher among quarterbacks in the NFL when he suffered a knee sprain in early November. However, he has thrown only five touchdowns with 11 interceptions and has a passer rating of just 66.0. When asked why he was making the move now, Allen emphasized that he was not benching McGloin and that it is simply another chance for the Raiders (4-11) to take another look at Pryor. Whether the decision was Allens or whether it came at the urging from owner Mark Davis remains unclear. Allen has been a strong supporter of McGloins since early in training camp and has repeatedly talked glowingly about the former Penn State star. Even after making the switch back to Pryor, Allen made it clear he believes McGloin will be in the mix for the job next season. McGloin has thrown more touchdowns (eight) and fewer interceptions (eight) than Pryor but has also completed a lower percentage of passes than his counterpart. "I liked a lot of things that I saw in Matt," Allen said. "He wasnt quite as sharp as he had been earlier in a couple of the earlier games, but Ive been pleased with what Ive seen out of (McGloin) from the first moment he walked on campus here. I think we have a guy that can be in our plans for the future and Im glad hes on this football team." Oaklands offence has made only modest improvements since then and the team has lost its past five games with McGloin as the starter. Allen gave players the day off Monday, so neither Pryor nor McGloin could be reached for comment. Two weeks ago, however, Pryor said he wasnt going to get caught up in a quarterback controversy.
