NEW ORLEANS -- By necessity, the Pelicans keep heaping more responsibility in Tyreke Evans lap -- and he keeps coming through. Evans had 22 points and a career-high 15 assists, and the short-handed Pelicans overcame the loss of Anthony Davis to extend their winning streak to a season-high five games, 102-95 victory over Utah on Friday night. The performance came with Evans starting at point guard, a role Evans occupied in stints with Sacramento earlier in his career, but not with New Orleans until this week, beginning with an upset victory over the Los Angeles Clippers on Wednesday. "I always seem to make it work. Im a basketball player," Evans said. "So, just trying to make the best of it, you know, for me and my teammates and the coaching staff and the organization. Just trying to finish the season out strong and win as many games as possible." Davis left with a left ankle injury less than four minutes in, further depleting New Orleans already injury-riddled roster. But the 6-foot-6 Evans simply looked for other teammates when the Jazzs defence collapsed on him, and the offence flowed. "Hes so big, he can see over the other guards and that gives him the ability to find guys," Pelicans coach Monty Williams said. "Hes always a threat to score at the basket, so that helps." Anthony Morrow scored 20 points, Al-Farouq Aminu added 13, and Austin Rivers and Darius Miller each had 12. Alexis Ajinca, playing 28 minutes in Davis absence, had 10 rebounds, nine points and three blocks. Derrick Favours had 18 points and 11 rebounds for the Jazz, who lost their third straight. Gordon Hayward added 21 points. "We just have to continue to fight and close those games out," said Trey Burke, who had 12 points. "We definitely had a chance to win this game tonight. "We arent going to get discouraged," Burke continued. "Were all good players and we know we are capable. No matter what, were sticking together." Before the game, the Jazz ruled out reserve guard Alec Burks with a left ankle sprain. The Pelicans, meanwhile, scratched guards Eric Gordon (left knee tendinitis) and Brian Roberts (left knee bone bruise). Davis started grimacing during the opening minutes. With 8:17 left in the first quarter, Ajinca was subbed into the game and Davis headed for the locker room. Williams did not update Davis condition after the game. Still, the Pelicans managed to maintain the lead for most of the way. Evans pushed the ball in transition and routinely slashed to the hoop to convert short floaters or layups in traffic. Otherwise, he found players such as Morrow and Miller on the perimeter. "Hes been doing a great job in that role change, but thats what great players do," Morrow said of Evans. "Im proud of him, glad hes stepped it up. Obviously he does a lot of things for us on both ends of the floor, and obviously hes adjusted his game and hes been great for us." Evans layup put the Pelicans up 72-66 heading into the fourth quarter, and his weaving dribble drive for a reverse scoop made it 87-81 with 1:52 left. Morrow hit three of his four 3-point attempts, the last giving the Pelicans an 85-79 lead with 3:05 left. Ajincas three-point play on an 8-foot jumper as he was fouled by Favours made it 90-83 with less than a minute left, but the teams traded a slew of free throws before it was over. Marvin Williams finished with 12 points for Utah, but the Jazz committed 19 turnovers, leading to 33 Pelicans points. Evans normally plays shooting guard or small forward, but once again looked comfortable at the point while scoring 13 first-half points. The Pelicans 39-31 when Morrows consecutive jumpers capped an 8-0 run, and New Orleans lead was 43-38 at halftime. NOTES: The Pelicans and Jazz split their previous two meetings. They meet once more on April 4 in Utah. ... The Jazz are 8-29 on the road. ... Utah next plays on Sunday in Oklahoma City. ... Evans has hit 20 points 15 times this season and has nine double-doubles. ... The Pelicans shot 50.7 per cent (36 of 71), marking the third time during their current winning streak they eclipsed the 50 per cent mark. Jonathan Marchessault Jersey . Defensive Depth TSN Hockey Insider Pierre LeBrun is reporting the Toronto Maple Leafs have considerable interest in unrestricted free-agent defenceman Dan Boyle. With LeBron James sticking around and some of the NBAs best players joining him, the U.S. basketball team could be better than ever. "The roster itself is the strongest roster weve ever had," USA Basketball chairman Jerry Colangelo said. Even without Kobe Bryant, who had said the 2012 London Olympics was his last international competition, its a formidable group. James and 10 others from the 2012 U.S. Olympic team are remaining in the national team pool, joined by a group of newcomers hoping for their first chance at gold. USA Basketball selected 28 players Thursday to choose from for the World Cup of Basketball this summer in Spain and the 2016 Rio Olympics. Carmelo Anthony was also chosen, giving him and James a chance to play in a fourth Olympics and win a third gold medal. They wont play this summer, but might still put on the red, white and blue one more time down the road. "We really do want to give some of the younger players an opportunity in Spain this summer, but they want to remain there and stay in the mix for being on our roster in Rio," Colangelo said on a conference call. Also selected from the 2012 gold medallists were: Kevin Durant, Chris Paul, Kevin Love, Deron Williams, James Harden, Russell Westbrook, Anthony Davis, Tyson Chandler and Andre Iguodala. Duke coach Mike Krzyzewski is back to lead the Americans, as he has done since 2005. The other players picked were: Chicagos Derrick Rose, Houstons Dwight Howard, the Clippers Blake Griffin, Indianas Paul George; Stephen Curry, David Lee and Klay Thompson of Golden State; LaMarcus Aldridge and Damian Lillard of Portland; Sacramentos DeMarcus Cousins, Kyrie Irving of Cleveland; San Antonios Kawhi Leonard; Washingtons Bradley Beal; Atlantas Kyle Korver; Detroits Andre Drummond; Denvers Kenneth Faried; and Utahs Gordon Hayward. Its an experienced, star-filled group -- it includes the NBAs top 10 scorers -- and the Americans stressed it will be "fluid," meaning more players could be added over the next three years. And unlike recent U.S. teams, its big. The Americans have been undersized up front, but have plenty of post players to choose from with Howard, Chandler, Cousins, Davis and Aldridge.dddddddddddd "Those are more big guys than weve had before," said Krzyzewski, noting he had James and Anthony on the floor as his two big men late in the 2012 gold-medal game. "We do have a few more options now." Half of the 28 players have already won gold in either the Olympics or world basketball championships, which was renamed for this years event. James, Anthony, Paul and Williams all have played for the last two Olympic gold-medal winners. Howard missed his chance to join them when he had to pull out of the 2012 London Games because of injury. So did Rose and Griffin -- the latter after he had made the final 12-man roster. Durant and Love were the first to announce their return last summer and are expected to play in Spain. They, along with Iguodala, Westbrook and Chandler, won gold in both 2010 and 2012. The Americans will have to trim the roster to 12 before heading to Spain. If they defend their world title, they will automatically clinch a spot for Rio. If not, they would have to play in an Olympic qualifying tournament in 2015. As in 2010, when they won the worlds for the first time since 1994, the Americans will likely feature a younger roster. But its a deep one, with the potential to bring players such as Aldridge, George and Cousins, who have been among the NBAs best this season. Then James, who began his Olympic career with a bronze in 2004, could make his way back. He and Anthony have already tied David Robinson for the most among U.S. players with their three Olympic appearances. "LeBron has an incredible opportunity to do it a fourth time and the mere fact that his name is on the roster indicates his desire and interest in continuing to have that opportunity in front of him," Colangelo said. Krzyzewski saw James on Wednesday when Duke played at Miami, and said the NBAs MVP was excited to remain involved. "For him to do it a fourth time would be just another star or asterisk next to his name and his career, and it appears thats exactly what he wants to try," Colangelo said.
